8 ways to save money on your scooter.

  1. Regularly check that your tyres are inflated correctly according to the manufacturers specifications. Under inflated tyres cause a larger footprint and hence more friction which means it takes more fuel to push your scooter along. If you doubt this try pushing your scooter over a distance with a next time you have a puncture, its really hard work!
  2. keep an eye on the price of petrol at the stations you pass regularly, fill up at the cheapest one. Even a few pence difference in price will add up over the course of time. Dont drive around looking for the cheapest place though thats an obvious false economy.
  3. Check your insurance quote when its time to renew, do you really need those extras such as ride any bike and pillion passenger insurance? All those little extras cost money, dont forget to compare insurance companies too.
  4. Ditch those after market parts, mirrors and racks and crash bars etc are all extra weight. it may not be much granted but each extra ounce uses fuel. Little steps.
  5. Dont ride like a nut! steady acceleration and braking is not only safer but uses less juice. Try to stick to your bikes optimum speed when your out of town driving, it should be in your owners manual or searchable online.
  6. Scooters were invented to provide cheap reliable transport that is easy to maintain, why not get a workshop manual and do minor repairs yourself. Not only will you save money but also learn to understand your scooter better which will make you a better rider and also make you appreciate your bike more. If you are in any doubt that you can accomplish a repair, have an experienced friend help you.
  7. Your scooter has a routine maintenance schedule, stick to that and you will save big money on replacing parts. Refer to your user manual or workshop manual, most of the work is easily done at home without specialist tools.
  8. Try to keep your scooter in good mechanical and cosmetic condition. Especialy the classic types such as vespa or lambretta etc. In good condition they really hold their money well and should you need to sell it at a lter date you shouldnt take a big loss.
